Professional Development Workshop: Introduction to GIS

Hey SLAISers.

Just to remind you: a free introductory workshop on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) librarianship is being co-hosted by the SLA and ASIS&T student chapters at UBC on February 3rd.

Tom Brittnacher, GIS Librarian at UBC, will present an introduction to the field of GIS and will cover the wide variety of roles and services that GIS Librarians perform. If this is a field you’d like to find out more about, reserve a place by registering here.

SLAIS Exclusive: UBC Law Library Tour

For those of you who haven’t heard, the new UBC Law building Allard Hall is open and ready for business. Of course, for all of us here at SLAIS, what that really means is that we have a new library on campus. Interested in taking a tour of the new UBC Law Library? Elim Wong, Reference Librarian at the UBC Law Library, has generously volunteered to show SLAIS students around the amazing new facilities and provide some insight into some of the design features found in the LEED-certified building.

When: Wednesday, October 26, 11:30-12:30

Where: Meet at the SLAIS lounge at 11:15 to go as a group, or come right at 11:30 to Room 208 in the Law Library

Reminder: SLA Week Library Crawl

For those of you who managed to snag a coveted spot in our library crawl, don’t forget to get down to the Starbucks at Waterfront Station by 12:45pm tomorrow. The schedule for tomorrow is as follows:

Canadian Music Centre – 3 pm

Contemporary Art Gallery – 4pm

Award Opportunity: Medical Library Association’s Rittenhouse Award

The Medical Library Association’s Rittenhouse Award offers a great opportunity for professional recognition–and more!–to students in an American Library Association–accredited school of library and information studies or to trainees in an internship in health sciences librarianship or medical informatics. Established in 1967 by the Rittenhouse Medical Bookstore and continued by Rittenhouse Book Distributors, this award is presented annually for the best unpublished paper (bibliographical, issue or topic-based, or report of research results) or web-based project on health sciences librarianship or medical informatics. The author of the winning essay receives free registration for the 2012 Medical Library Association’s annual meeting in Seattle, plus a cash award of $500 and a certificate.
